A Separate Peace: Gene and Finny's Relationship Gene and Finny's relationship goes beyond friendship and pushes the boundaries of brotherhood, the two boys are most correctly described as part of one another. Each incident gives Gene strange feeling that Phineas is part of him. As Gene puts away his suspicious doubts of Finny's loyalty, the relationship grows stronger and the boys become more dependent upon one another.
